Council of South Florida October Health Tip

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to Miami Matters, 19.6 out of every 100,000 women in Miami-Dade County die due to breast cancer, which is better than Florida’s average. Additionally, since 1990, the overall breast cancer death rates have been declining due to advancements in treatment and detection. The following are some tips to encourage breast health.
1) Perform monthly self-examinations. If you don’t know how to examine yourself, ask your health care provider, or visit http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-self-exam
2) Mammograms are critical for early detection, but the procedure can be uncomfortable. Breast tissue is more sensitive during menstruation; therefore, schedule your exam after your period.
3) Eat more vegetables. Studies show that women with diets high in vegetable based fiber have lower rates of breast cancer.
4) Follow a healthy lifestyle because inactivity, excessive weight, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking can increase the risk of developing breast cancer.
5) Breast feed for as long as possible, women who breast-feed their babies for at least a year in total have a reduced risk of developing breast cancer.
