HWCOM Presents Award to Promising High School Student
May 30, 2013
Students typically learn over 10,000 words in their first year of medical
school. On Thursday, May 23, one talented high school student received a
jumpstart on her medical vocabulary when she was presented with the Herbert
Wertheim College of Medicine Book Award at the Medical Academy for Science and
Technology Saber Pride 2013 Award Ceremony. In recognition of her passion for
medicine, high GPA and community service involvement, 11th grade
student Raquel Koch was presented with a Stedman Medical Dictionary by Barbra
Roller, PhD, assistant dean for student affairs.
The Medical Academy for Science and Technology,
otherwise known as MAST@Homestead, is the second medical magnet high school in
the state of Florida, offering specializations in biomedicine, physical therapy
and pharmaceuticals. The three-year-old school has a had a relationship with the
College of Medicine since its inception, with the College having hosted a number
of tours and talks about health careers for the high school’s students. Koch
will learn more about the opportunities at the College from Roller when she
tours the school with her family later this summer.
